Microsoft and Epic enlist OpenAI to save healthcare

Would you trust AI to keep you safe? Microsoft and Epic are banking on it. The two companies are vying to streamline healthcare systems around the world to keep you safe, using their trademark software solutions: Microsoft’s OpenAI and Epic’s patented EHR.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) intelligence into common consumer technologies isn’t going away, with even the titans of the tech space vying to utilise the new tech to make headway. Microsoft has been a household name since the company reinvented personal computing in the mid-’70s. Now, a stride towards integrating Azure’s OpenAI Service into its offering promises to uphold Microsoft’s reputation and reinforce its position in the market, by better serving the healthcare industry.

On Monday 17th April, Microsoft Corp. announced that the company was expanding its ‘strategic collaboration’ with Epic – the self-described developer of cutting-edge games and cross-platform game engine technology – to develop and better integrate generation AI into the healthcare sector. The companies will do this by harnessing Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, breakthrough AI tools that provide industry-leading code and language AI models; across any sector, Azure OpenAI can help modern workers complete tasks more efficiently, with less.

How are they doing it?

Microsoft seeks to utilise Azure’s ever-developing toolset to combine both its scale and power with Epic’s industry-leading electronic health record (EHR) software. It reinforces the companies’ long-standing partnership, which already enables organisations to run Epic’s digital environments on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

A shared innovation, it promises to deliver a ‘comprehensive array’ of generative AI-powered solutions that are integrated with Epic’s electronic health record software to increase productivity, enhance patient care and improve the financial integrity of health systems across the globe – its potential extends beyond borders.

Its worth is already being proven, as UC San Diego Health, UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin and Stanford Health Care have each deployed these innovative enhancements to automatically draft message responses, alleviating users from the common stresses of time-sensitive responses and faceless, automated responses. Another innovation will introduce conversational, natural language queries and interactive data analysis to SlicerDicer, Epic’s current self-serving reporting tool.

This will help clinical leaders to explore their data and findings in more intuitive ways. As per Microsoft’s press release, “A good use of technology simplifies things related to workforce and workflow,” said Chero Goswami, chief information officer at UW Health.

“Integrating generative AI into some of our daily workflows will increase productivity for many of our providers, allowing them to focus on the clinical duties that truly require their attention.”

OpenAI to the rescue!

Leading industry experts have repeatedly flagged just how urgently health systems and hospitals need to address the intense pressures on both costs and margins; in the US, approximately half of hospitals ended last year in the red.

Microsoft and Epic’s cutting-edge collaboration and implementation of Azure OpenAI Service promise to further streamline processes across the board, making it easier for healthcare organisations to identify operational improvements – improvements that not only include reducing costs, but changes that will ultimately assist workers in finding answers to questions locally, and potentially, worldwide. A digital solution for personal problems.

What if a manager was able to instantaneously know which five résumés of the stack of 200 were the best candidates to interview, all without having to read all 200 documents? What if this same manager could know what their employees were doing at their desks or in the building, without having to spy on them or peer over a cubicle awkwardly? And what if this manager could even detect attitude changes in an employee that indicates their dissatisfaction with the company? These quasi-superpowers seem like something out of a Marvel movie in the office space.  However, thanks to management AI software, this is not for the big screen or distant future anymore, managers can now be assisted in their jobs by AI.  There are three ways in which AI can now assist managers’ jobs.

The first way management AI software can assist managers’ jobs is in the task of hiring new employees.  While AI may not be able to interview candidates or make the call of bringing a new employee on the team, it can simplify this process.  AI software can sort through hundreds of résumés and search for crucial traits that match what an employer is looking for.  Not only that, this software can even broaden the search by looking at résumés beyond where the manager would look.  This management AI software can also allow companies to search out candidates rather than waiting for candidates to come to them.

The second way management AI software can assist managers’ jobs is by monitoring the work and whereabouts of employees.  There are several ways AI programming can monitor employees.  The software can track the computer usage of an employee – how many hours are they on Facebook and Amazon instead of on an Excel spreadsheet.  The program can even take periodic screenshots and keep the screenshots for a set time-period.  If an employee is up to something worse, the AI can send an alert to management.  Some companies have even created radio badges that can track the location of employees on an app and also send alerts if they trespass into unauthorized areas.  These monitoring protocols allow managers to have a better idea of when employees are doing their job, need to be correct, or beyond that.

The final way management AI software can assist managers’ jobs is by allowing managers to see aspects of their employees’ personal side.  For example, the software can examine the language and phrases used in emails to determine if the employee has a positive or negative attitude toward the job.  The software can also compare these observations over a set period and therefore see a change develop.  This software can go even further; it can predict if an employee is looking to leave the company.  The software can detect when an employee is considering a move to another company, and it can even give specific instructions on how to keep this employee.

Management is a job that will most likely always require a human to make decisions and direct other people.  AI technology has advanced to the point that managers can now be assisted in their work in ways that would have been thought science fiction only a matter of years ago.

There are some things in the world that can never be fully understood–the laws of gravity, the concept of time, etc… But none of these things can top the utter mystery and shock that ensues when someone at a burger joint orders a meatless burger. So let’s get this straight, an order of lettuce, tomato, and cheese between two buns? That’s like buying a Ferrari and asking to swap out the V8 for an inline 4. Sandwiches, burgers included, are named after the meat in the sandwich. Why? The meat is best part. No one asks for a lettuce and pickle sandwich add turkey and bacon. Quite the contrary. The proper way to order a sandwich is to get the turkey and bacon sandwich and substitute the lettuce and tomato for more bacon. The heart of the sandwich–or burger–is what defines it. The case is no different for the current innovation economy–artificial intelligence is its heart.

Artificial Intelligence and the Innovation Economy

The concept of the innovation economy was introduced in 1942 by Joseph Schumpeter with the advent of Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. Schumpeter argued that entrepreneurs and technological advancements are the lifeblood of economic growth and expansion. Though it took a while to catch on, Schumpeter’s ideas have been growing rapidly in popularity in recent years. This growth, in both the innovation and the global economies, can be attributed in large part to the growth in artificial intelligence technologies. From data science to machine learning to advances in robotics, AI has taken its place as one of the leaders in technological progression.

Hillary Mason, the Founder of Fast Forward Labs, a machine intelligence research company, argued in an interview that AI is “close” to the heart of our new innovation economy. She cites the growing trends in the industry, including the progress made in machine learning and big data. Mason notes that these developments are “legitimately exciting,” as AI continues to shed its former stereotype of impractical, research-only technology. Rather than being a temporary fad that passes in the night, Mason genuinely believes that the progress is permanent–and worthwhile.

The Elephant in the Room

Not all AI entrepreneurs share the same sentiment as Mason. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has recently been very critical of AI, saying in a tweet, “If you’re not concerned about AI safety, you should be. Vastly more risk than North Korea.” His tweet was also accompanied by a photo of a poster with the ominous words, “In the end, the machines will win.” Though Musk’s views aren’t echoed by everyone in the industry–Mason, for example, argues that machines won’t overtake humans because they cannot be rational–they do reflect a very common hesitation towards AI. In the back of everyone’s mind is the warning that every AI sci-fi movie has given–machines will outpace humans and eventually assume control of the planet. Yes, it seems far fetched and outlandish, but according to the brightest minds, it is entirely plausible.

For the time being, however, the advances of the industry ought to be praised. These technological accomplishments really are the way of the future. And as advances continue and progress takes place, global economies have much to look forward to. In many ways, it appears as if society as a whole is beginning to see that AI really is the meat to the sandwich–the heart of the innovation economy.
