Getting better: next-gen healthcare solutions

We’ve recently reported on how artificial intelligence assistants are giving physicians a helping hand. Now, Enterprise Tech is reporting how the healthtech landscape is evolving. How can technology change healthcare in the UK? Let’s find out.

Healthcare in the UK is facing steep challenges; Keir Starmer certainly thinks so, and with good reason. Santosh Sahu at Enterprise Tech states that NHS waiting lists are at a record high of 7.3 million due to a lack of funding, resources and staff shortages – all impacted by the pandemic, growth in demand and staff shortages.

How can technology change healthcare?

The crossroads between tech and healthcare is a tricky one. Ultimately, when we’re concerned about our health, we want face-to-face advice and real solutions. Just as Labour leader Keir Starmer argued last week, digitisation may be the key to heralding drastic change.

Currently, pharmacies play a vital role in the UK’s health system, as they offer services that offer the work of GPs, general practitioners. Pharmacies provide consultations, prescriptions and vaccinations, as signalled by the Government’s Pharmacy First initiative, with Britain’s 11,700 ‘community pharmacies’ will be able to play an ever greater role in patients’ lives. Software as a Service is key to easing pressures in the system – Sahu reports that insufficient government funding caused almost 400 pharmacies to close entirely between 2020 and 2022.

“Pharmacies cannot fully take advantage of Pharmacy First due to a lack of funding and resources.”
– Santosh Sahu

So what’s the solution? The ‘healthtech’ industry is a booming market, valued at just over £3 billion in 2021. This number may surprise you, considering the original aim and intent of the National Healthcare Service; like so many other publicly-funded institutions, privatised innovation may be the key to long-term success. Hundreds of healthtech start-ups now exist within our shores, providing a wealth of opportunities for researchers, investors and innovators to do exactly that.

Charac and easy access

One such example is Charac. Founded by Katherine Bridges, its Head of Brand and Clinical lead and a former NHS nurse, it’s one of many digital services offering atypical solutions that are empowering entrepreneurs to produce solutions to “fill market gaps and ultimately improve patient outcomes”. Charac’s modus operandi is simple: an easy way of monitoring prescriptions, any time, anywhere, that allows chemists and patients complete, transparent access to their medication records.

“Charac provides independent community pharmacies with a holistic digital presence, allowing pharmacists to book and conduct consultations online and even deliver medications through its partnership with Royal Mail.”
– Katherine Bridges

If pharmacies are struggling with burgeoning costs, such digital solutions serve and streamline both staff and their communities. Almost half (47%) of patients use pharmacies for repeat prescriptions – if the entirety of this process is liberated by a SaaS (systems as a service) model like Charac and its competitors, staff can afford to be more present and more effective, galvanising the Government’s Pharmacy First approach and freeing up valuable NHS resources to be deployed elsewhere.

Care and crisis

Ask any Brit and they’ll have an opinion on how the current government handles the NHS. As more and more services seem to be sliced, diced and privatised, it’s becoming increasingly evident that the NHS is shifting further and further away from Nye Bevan’s original ambition for a medical care service that provided point-of-need help, regardless of wealth. Well, it shouldn’t surprise you that Labour’s Keir Starmer, the current leader of the Conservatives’ opposition, has an opinion. If Starmer has anything to do with it, the NHS is going digital… but is that solution just a fragment of a much bigger, more pressing matter?

This week, Starmer shared his vision for a new, digital mode of working within the NHS with the Guardian – if Labour’s leader gets his way, the service will be streamlined. Starmer blasts the current regime: “Tories have run the NHS into the ground with ambulances not arriving until too late, swift GP appointments a thing of the past and more than 7 million people waiting for treatment. But it’s about a lot more than that.”

NHS is going digital – what does this fix?

Yet to the average citizen, it’s not always apparent how the government’s edicts actually affect the outcomes; it’s obfuscated. On behalf of his party, Starmer has outlined a “health mission” that restructures the NHS from the ground up.  Moving from an analogue system to a digital system signals a shift towards showcasing the UK’s flourishing life sciences sector, and utilising an entire population’s data to work on a truly national scale. With so much data segregated, it can’t benefit the bigger picture.

“we are announcing details of our health mission with the clear aim of making the NHS fit for the future – a prevention-first model and a shift from hospitals to the community so that illness is caught early and at home, not late and in hospital.”
– Starmer’s manifesto

Post-Covid care

Starmer points out that more than 30 million members of the public signed up for the NHS app during the pandemic – Covis made it necessary, but we have dropped the ball when it comes to maintaining that momentum. For many, the pandemic brought about a dramatic shift in how we consider our health. As the influence of Covid has dwindled in our public consciousness, so too has this direct, digital relationship with our health. The parallels are potent.
Under Labour’s watch, this app would serve as a single front door to all NHS services – fully digital patient records, yes, but the key is all in one place. Right now, ‘digital healthcare’ might conjure up ideas of self-diagnosis, but Labour’s leader is keen to usher in an era in which, “In one place a patient will be able to book appointments, use appropriate self-referral routes, get reminders for checkups and screenings, receive the latest guidance on treatment and have the ability to take part in clinical trials, something particularly important if you are one of the more than 3 million people in the UK who will be affected by a rare disease in their lifetime.”
These comments legitimise areas of healthcare some of us would rather overlook, and Starmer seems hopeful that a society in control of its own data could ultimately have more control over its health. A democratising of healthcare is a bright idea, but it will need careful management and demands literacy with technology the oldest – and typically most vulnerable – members of society will be resistant to.
Technology has the power to not only empower patients but ultimately, to save lives too. Starmer’s comments hint at a brighter future for the NHS – hopefully, it’s not one limited to any one party’s politics or interests.
Is this the shot in the arm you think the NHS needs? Let us know in the comments!

Europe Welcomes its First AI Assistant For Doctors

An AI assistant for doctors – is it just the tonic?

ChatGPT seems to be changing the world of work in real-time – modern workers are finding new ways to engage with their sectors across every industry. Yet whilst the AI software’s seemingly limitless capabilities promise to streamline everyday tasks with automated, wholly digital solutions to strategic thinking, Tonic App has now launched an assistant, Dr Tonic, that promises to streamline the practices of physicians, too. They’ve made an AI assistant for doctors, and it’s changing the way they work.

It’s a technology that saves time, but is it a technology that can save lives?

The stress of going to the doctors is universal, and not only does Tonic App’s advancement promise to support GPs and physicians with medical, administrative and personal tasks – it’s likely to have a direct effect on the patient’s experience.

Tech to save time; tech to save lives

As per Presswire‘s feature, Dr Tonic supports medical doctors go about their day-to-day tasks; it’s powered by ChatGPT ADI, the LLM (large language model) that’s trained by OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT.

Built into the Tonic App, it’s designed to make it easier for doctors to retrieve information, summarise medical records and key findings and intuitively write templates for patient referrals. Not only that, it will translate even the most confusing of health jargon for patients, and work as a personal assistant in the more traditional sense – it’s even got HR capabilities built in.

“We are excited to launch Dr Tonic because we believe this is the start of a new era for healthcare. AI finally enters the day-to-day operations of healthcare professionals, after years of promise”, says Daniela Seixas, the CEO of Tonic App, and a medical doctor herself.

“It is estimated that up to 40% of doctors’ time is desk work, particularly in primary care. We can now help medical doctors save real time, reduce stress, and focus on what matters the most: patients. AI is also set to help compensate the shortfall of healthcare workers in Europe.” – Dr Sexias

Already used by 119,000 physicians, the cheerful virtual assistant totalled an average of 414 words after its first 24 hours of availability. So far, the recorded top use cases have been medical knowledge retrieval, questions regarding medical studies, ‘utilitarian questions’, inquiries about the app itself and finally, queries about the reliability of the service.

So, why not just use ChatGPT…?

Despite the prevalence of ChatGPT, and the fact it was trained with a significant body of medical knowledge, it’s not yet ready for primetime when it comes to diagnosis and decision-making. Tonic App has amassed clinical content and previously acquired data to fuel the Dr Tonic; given that it has been created by doctors and medical workers (and attains to the highest standards of care), it can safely be used for clinical decision making. What’s more, further use by GPs and doctors will make it even more viable as a service!

Of course, the ethics of artificial intelligence making decisions is still being ironed out; in terms of data privacy and third party personal data, Dr Tonic falls short. Simply, it’s not allowed to know which patient its treating, and GDPR compliance must, thankfully be adhered to. That said, we do stand on a precipice – in the future, it’s likely this will all seem like second nature.

You might not be meeting a robot doctor any time, but expect an altogether streamlined experience thanks to the newest doc on the block, Dr Tonic.

Find. out more about Dr Tonic at www.tonicapp.io. Whilst it’s not currently in use in the UK, medical workers across France, Italy, Spain and Portugal have already taken the plunge.

Microsoft and Epic enlist OpenAI to save healthcare

Would you trust AI to keep you safe? Microsoft and Epic are banking on it. The two companies are vying to streamline healthcare systems around the world to keep you safe, using their trademark software solutions: Microsoft’s OpenAI and Epic’s patented EHR.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) intelligence into common consumer technologies isn’t going away, with even the titans of the tech space vying to utilise the new tech to make headway. Microsoft has been a household name since the company reinvented personal computing in the mid-’70s. Now, a stride towards integrating Azure’s OpenAI Service into its offering promises to uphold Microsoft’s reputation and reinforce its position in the market, by better serving the healthcare industry.

On Monday 17th April, Microsoft Corp. announced that the company was expanding its ‘strategic collaboration’ with Epic – the self-described developer of cutting-edge games and cross-platform game engine technology – to develop and better integrate generation AI into the healthcare sector. The companies will do this by harnessing Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, breakthrough AI tools that provide industry-leading code and language AI models; across any sector, Azure OpenAI can help modern workers complete tasks more efficiently, with less.

How are they doing it?

Microsoft seeks to utilise Azure’s ever-developing toolset to combine both its scale and power with Epic’s industry-leading electronic health record (EHR) software. It reinforces the companies’ long-standing partnership, which already enables organisations to run Epic’s digital environments on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

A shared innovation, it promises to deliver a ‘comprehensive array’ of generative AI-powered solutions that are integrated with Epic’s electronic health record software to increase productivity, enhance patient care and improve the financial integrity of health systems across the globe – its potential extends beyond borders.

Its worth is already being proven, as UC San Diego Health, UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin and Stanford Health Care have each deployed these innovative enhancements to automatically draft message responses, alleviating users from the common stresses of time-sensitive responses and faceless, automated responses. Another innovation will introduce conversational, natural language queries and interactive data analysis to SlicerDicer, Epic’s current self-serving reporting tool.

This will help clinical leaders to explore their data and findings in more intuitive ways. As per Microsoft’s press release, “A good use of technology simplifies things related to workforce and workflow,” said Chero Goswami, chief information officer at UW Health.

“Integrating generative AI into some of our daily workflows will increase productivity for many of our providers, allowing them to focus on the clinical duties that truly require their attention.”

OpenAI to the rescue!

Leading industry experts have repeatedly flagged just how urgently health systems and hospitals need to address the intense pressures on both costs and margins; in the US, approximately half of hospitals ended last year in the red.

Microsoft and Epic’s cutting-edge collaboration and implementation of Azure OpenAI Service promise to further streamline processes across the board, making it easier for healthcare organisations to identify operational improvements – improvements that not only include reducing costs, but changes that will ultimately assist workers in finding answers to questions locally, and potentially, worldwide. A digital solution for personal problems.

Would you trust OpenAI to keep you safe? Let us know in the comments!
