Silicon Valley has long ruled the tech space, but there may be a new spot for the industry. Recent US tech grads are headed to Seattle over anywhere else since 2022. The city has a 15.2% “in-migration rate” for new tech workers. Austin sits in second place, while San Francisco (in close proximity to Silicon Valley) comes third. 

Why Is San Francisco’s Growth Slowing?

The pandemic prompted a lot of change, not least both San Francisco and Chicago had a minor outflow of migration. Meanwhile Austin and Nashville attracted new residents. The reason for this generally comes down to the high cost of living in certain places, but this trend has been slowing more recently. 

Is Seattle The Next Tech Boom Town?

The city has seen positive net migration every year since 2021. It’s thought that much of the new tech intake is down to ex-Amazon or Microsoft employees hit by recent mass layoffs, coming to work for Seattle’s many tech start-ups. A recent study by the Washington Technology Industry Association found that the information and communication tech sector increased by 33% in the area between 2019 and 2022, with 89,000 new jobs. 

The Washington Technology Industry Association said, tech…

“remains a key driver of Washington’s economy, with the net increase in tech sector employment and tax revenue generation still far exceeding growth among other major sectors in the state’s economy.”

The City of Seattle released a new report warning that they may be relying too much on the tech industry… 

“Our regional dependence on the technology sector was a strength for many years, but that is shifting as the sector cools,” … “In addition, the longer-term implications of work-from-home are expected to ripple through other local sectors, with perhaps the construction sector most directly impacted.”

Conclusion 

Silicon Valley still reigns supreme but Seattle is giving it a run for its money. Perhaps, the city is right to be concerned about its dependence on the sector, especially as many industry workers no longer go into the office. The NHL (National Hockey League) founded in 1917, making it over 100 years old, is well and truly keeping up with the times. When every organisation of all types and sizes needs to be working to understand and mitigate their climate impact, the NHL is leading the way on sustainability. 

What Makes Ice Hockey A Climate Impactful Sport? 

The NHL is a huge organisation with 32 member clubs and 670 million fans. Anything this big is likely to have a rather hefty carbon footprint. But that’s not even considering the huge impact of the energy needed to power their stadiums, which vice president of Sustainable Infrastructure and Growth Initiatives at the NHL, Omar Mitchell compares to “a giant refrigerator”. He says, “we use a lot of energy — not to mention the lights we use to illuminate the ice’s surface.”

Unlike many businesses, the NHL relies on particular environmental conditions for its survival. Mitchell points out, “When we think about things that we need for the continuation of hockey, we need things like natural ice, cold weather, and fresh water,”… “We also need vibrant and healthy communities where we can play our sport.” All these things are threatened by the climate crisis, which gives the NHL all the more reason to act with urgency. 

How Will The NHL Go Green?

The NHL’s Green Program, launched in 2010, instils sustainable practice across the organisation from an executive to club level. Its first sustainability report was conducted in 2014 and involved a carbon inventory. This inventory allowed the NHL to get to grips with where and how their carbon emissions were produced. When a company calculates their scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions they can locate and measure their impact, in order to develop a plan to reduce it. Carbon calculation is the first step of a businesses’ sustainability journey but unfortunately isn’t as popular as it could be. 

Mitchell says… 

“It was a documentation of all the scope one, scope two, and limited-scope three greenhouse gas emissions associated with our game and with everything around hosting these events throughout the calendar year”

The NHL ’s Digital Decarbonisation 

Upon the release of their second report in 2018 they began to look to technology for optimised methods of data collection and processing. They worked with SAP on a new digital platform called NHL Venue Metrics that gathers data from clubs across the league. Analysis using this platform allows the NHL to interpret their data. The platform is also designed to help venues and operators decide on decarbonising investments and upgrades.

The initial 2014 report found that 70% of the leagues carbon emissions were generated by the energy consumption of their venues. With the help of NHL Venue Metrics it’s thought this percentage could be hugely reduced. Mitchell explains…

“We needed an innovative platform that could help us streamline that data collection, make it easier for all stakeholders to be able to input that data, and to visualize and process it — so that there are meaningful insights that our Clubs and venue partners could act on.”

Summary 

All businesses should be releasing transparent and digitally optimised sustainability reports that clearly outline that scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. With the climate crisis ramping us as it is, we don’t have time to wait. The NHL has a huge challenge on its hands to decarbonise such an enormous, carbon intensive organisation. You can tell you’re getting old when a new social media platform launches and you have no clue how it works. Do not worry though because I have done the research for you. Threads is basically a text-based social media platform that is connected to your Instagram account. Those who are lucky then will not have to add their mum as a friend! (Unless of course they suddenly work out how to use Instagram).

Simply by logging into your Instagram credentials, you can then create a Threads account. The beauty of this you see, especially if you crave followers, is that your following list from your Instagram carries over. Thus totally eliminating the need to start from scratch. How appealing does that sound?

Twitter vs. Threads: The Ultimate Showdown

At no surprise, Twitter and Threads are weighing up as some pretty hefty competition. But this is just the reality when it comes to social media. For many, many (and many) years Twitter has always remained supreme as the quirky, character-led social media platform.

Unlike Instagram where your looks got you likes or a cute puppy, on Twitter your personality got you likes. Imagine saying you had a viral tweet over discussing how great being told you make a cup of tea is as a compliment. Kind of hits differently than saying your photo of your smoothie bowl got 10k likes on Instagram right?

Unfortunately, Elon Musk got his greedy paws on Twitter and has ultimately changed the love people had for it. Unpopular changes such as limiting tweet viewing and potential charges, it comes expected that Threads has hit the ground running. Although still a newbie it holds some promise. Offering a user experience that mirrors Twitter whilst maintaining a unique focus on community-building. Furthermore, the integration with Instagram gives it a strong position within the social media terrain.

What Does This Mean for B2B Marketers?

No doubt, social media managers and marketers alike this past week felt faint at the idea of another platform being added to their never-ending task flow. Looking through an alternative angle, Threads does however present itself as something more than a new platform.

A key benefit is that it fosters community engagement. Businesses are able to stay connected with their target audience by actively participating in any relevant conversations whilst viewing insights into emerging trends. Additionally, businesses can showcase their expertise, leadership is a key differentiating factor in the world of B2B and Threads provide a unique platform for this.

Threads are being viewed as a breath of fresh air in a space where attention spans are getting shorter and short (thanks TikTok). However, by emphasising a space for genuine engagement and community building, businesses are given a refreshing opportunity to differentiate themselves.

Emerging as a powerful tool in the B2B social media landscape. Threads are set to change communication, collaboration and advertising. Businesses can now tell captivating stories whilst showcasing their expertise within a threaded conversation.
